A new mariachi event will be taking place in the Rio Grande Valley.
During the 2017 ‘Charro Days’ festival in Brownsville, the first Mariachi festival begins.
This will be a 2 day event where students will have the opportunity to learn from the internationally acclaimed Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlan.
Competitors from the valley and the state of Texas will have a chance to share a stage with this world famous group.
Festival Director Berta Guerra says, “they find it very important for fellowship and also for education because they are able to practice and they’re able to increase their technicallity musically. … For the rio grande valley, it means we’re promoting culture and technicality through music.”
Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlan is ranked as the best in the world by some mariachi associations.

El Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán es una agrupación de música folklórica mexicana creada en 1898 por el maestro Gaspar Vargas López (1880-1969), y que se encuentra actualmente bajo la producción artística y dirección general del maestro Rubén Fuentes y cuya dirección musical está a cargo de Carlos Martínez. La agrupación está conformada por un arpa, una vihuela, una guitarra, un guitarrón, tres trompetas y siete violines, y se autodenominan El Mejor Mariachi del Mundo, nombre que el propio Fuentes (siendo en 1956 director artístico de la RCA Víctor) sugirió para el grupo.

Mariachi 7 Leguas was founded in 2004 by director Emilio Santos in McAllen, Texas. The mission of Mariachi 7 Leguas is to perform and serve as successful ambassadors of the mariachi arts, through elegant performance and musicianship. The men of Mariachi 7 Leguas all are an impressive group of multi-talented backgrounds from in education to entrepreneurship.
Mariachi 7 Leguas has the honor of holding multiple award winning titles including Valley’s Best Mariachi as first place winners at the Annual Mariachi Festival 2008. Award Winners at the San Juan Shrine Competition, “Mr. Paisano” Cd. Camargo, Tamaulipas, International Ambassadors of Mariachi Music” Atotonilco el Alto Jalisco, first place winners at Univision Radio Music Festival, and secretaria de relaciones exteriors title for Mexico’s International competition for best performing mariachi in the world competing against 22 countries.
Campanas de America is an innovative twelve-piece musical ensemble mariachi band founded in 1978 in San Antonio, Texas. The band (Bells of America in English) was named after Belle Ortiz, the wife of the band’s musical director and manager, Juan Ortiz. They have performed nationwide, and continue with an active recording career.
Expanding in style from traditional mariachi sounds, the band also uses more diverse instruments including the accordion, keyboards, and a full drum kit. They are the only mariachi band to display an instrument at the Hard Rock Café.
They performed at the Hispanic Heritage Award in 1999, 2000 and 2004. Their 2004 appearance was televised nationwide on NBC and Telemundo. In 2003 they were featured in a performance at the White House for President and Mrs. Bush. On July 20, 2005, the band won the “Best Mariachi” award at the 1st “Premios Music Latina Austin” awards in Austin Texas, during which they also performed.

I can’t fully express just how wonderful these musicians are and how pleased I am with their performance at their concert. They weren’t too loud or too soft – just the perfect mix of energy and mellowness. Guests were able to talk amongst themselves while enjoying the entertainment. They mingled from table to table, singing and playing, allowing all guests to feel included in the entertainment. As for professionalism and talent, they are top notch. I would attend their show again in a heartbeat.

Sebastien De La Cruz is a ten-year old boy born in San Antonio, Texas, with a strong voice, known around Texas as “El Charro de Oro” (the golden mariachi). In his brief singing career Sebastien has been featured in the media, has opened for the internationally acclaimed Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, and knows exactly what he wants out of life—to make people happy through music. At the age of six he told his parents he wanted to sing mariachi music, and with much hard work and determination, he began learning some of the songs and singing at local community events. Sebastien has proven himself to be among the best young mariachi vocalists in the US.
